Safeguarding

Safeguarding

Safeguarding means preventing harm to children and adults at risk by protecting them from abuse or neglect. The Church in Wales is committed to safeguarding as an integral part of its life, mission and ministry.

The Church in Wales will:

  • promote the wellbeing of children and adults at risk
  • raise awareness of safeguarding within the Church
  • work to prevent abuse or harm from occurring
  • seek to protect and respond well to those that have been abused

Safeguarding is everybody’s responsibility.

Our Mission Area is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. The Mission Area regularly revises its Safeguarding Policy and all clergy and other lay leaders involved in work with children and vulnerable adults receive the required safeguarding training.

Safeguarding Awareness

All church members are being encouraged to undergo a safeguarding awareness course to ensure churches are safe places for everyone.

A new safeguarding awareness course was launched online in October 2020 for all those involved in church life – from leaders to congregation members. It is being delivered by St Padarn’s Institute, the training arm of the Church in Wales.

The course takes people through a series of animated films to explain the role of safeguarding in church life as clearly as possible. It covers subjects such as how to recognise signs of emotional, physical or sexual abuse and what to do if you suspect abuse is taking place. Once signed on, the course takes about 90 minutes to complete. It features two quizzes which people have to pass before being awarded a certificate.
